Cancer has touched all of us Im sure in one way or another. Earlier year FIYC lost a dear friend after a valiant 18 month journey to over come this terrible disease, our first Commodore, Epicurus Emmons.
We wish to continue to honor Epi by continuing to fight to help to find a cure by doing what he loved.. Sailing.

[14:08] Chad Sawson: Thank you for joining us today to remember and celebrate our good friend Epicurus Emmons who passed away on March 10th of this year.
[14:08] Chad Sawson: I have been asked to guide the memorial today and it was my honor to accept this responsibility.
[14:08] Chad Sawson: We have several speakers who will reflect on their memories of and provide tribute to our fellow sailor Epi.
[14:09] Chad Sawson: Looks like we are having some SL issues today but we will get started
[14:09] Chad Sawson: Let me first start out by reading a part of Epi's profile...
[14:09] Chad Sawson: "I am a fan of the philosopher Epicurus."
[14:09] Chad Sawson: "2300 years ago he told us that by nature, pleasure is good and pain is bad."
[14:10] Chad Sawson: "And that the ultimate pleasure is peace of mind."
[14:10] Chad Sawson: "This and friendship is what we need to be happy. Its that simple really :)"
[14:10] Chad Sawson: Anyone that knew Epi saw the reflection of the philosopher's guidance whenever they were around him.
[14:10] Chad Sawson: After his lengthy RL battle with Glioblastoma, a brain tumor, we know that, after his passing, the ultimate pleasure was bestowed upon him... "Peace Of Mind".
[14:10] Chad Sawson: We are gathered here today to prove he fulfilled the second wish he had and that is... "Friendship"
[14:10] Chad Sawson: I ask now that we have a minute of silence to reflect on the joy and laughter he brought to Second Life and the sailing community...

[14:13] Chad Sawson: I will introduce them one at a time and ask that when they are finished, that they turn the podium back to me for the next introduction.
[14:13] Chad Sawson: Our first speaker today is the co-owner of Sailors Cove Estates where Epi & Pippa made their home. Please welcome Ms. Fanci Beebe.
[14:13] Chad Sawson: Thank you Fanci! :-)
[14:14] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): In a world such as Second Life all of the day to day trappings of the real world are peeled away. I have long believed that you get to know the real person, the person inside much more quickly than you would in the “real” world.
[14:14] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): The person I came to know as Epicurus Emmons or Epi was truly exceptional. He was so many things to so many people he was, friend, avid sailor, mentor, work colleague, champion of causes, a brother figure, of course wonderful husband and mate to Pippa and well just overall great person.
[14:15] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): He was the kind of person who would stand beside you in your darkest hour and believe in you… telling you the whole time, “it will be fine you’ll see”. I’m sure there are many that could attest to that.

[14:15] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): I am positive that you would be hard pressed to find anyone who met him that didn’t like Epi. He was just that way. Over the vast internet he touched many many lives in many many places.
[14:16] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): He was so instrumental in building our Fishers Island Yacht Club. As our first acting Commodore, he literally dreamt and built it from the ground up with Patrick and me.
He loved sailing in second life. FIYC became something to shape and work into the bigger scheme of the Second Life sailing community and he gave it his all.

[14:16] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): We worked together closely even to envisioning the place the club now stands on. He was so proud of what was happening here. We where all so proud to have such a sailor as our Commodore.
[14:16] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): He was funny, kind, giving, caring, serious, dedicated, loyal and could have a wicked sense of humor. He could be wonderfully silly those occasions silly on those occasions that warranted a bit of silliness. I’m smiling as I say these things at memories of dances and parties and just sitting around in groups.
[14:17] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): When I met Pippa, I was very touched by the warmth in her and once I knew she was unattached, couldn’t wait to introduce them. It was the most natural thing in the world to me to bring these two very special people together.
[14:17] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): It may not have gone anywhere, but to be honest, to me they seemed so well suited. And so it began. Subtle hints and yes some not so subtle to each about the other. Little nudges like, why don’t you see if he/she could help with this or that to do with the Yacht Club.
[14:17] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): I have to tell you here, I am so proud to have had the opportunity to be in the time and place to be able to give little pushes.. grins. You hear of matches made in heaven, how often do we ever get to see one that I truly believe was.
[14:18] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): To say he will be missed is an understatement, he will be. He has left so much of himself with us we can take comfort in those things.
[14:18] Fanci Beebe-Leavitt (fanci.beebe): I envision him now, in a boat, perhaps his Trudeau One, a favorite of his, sailing in calm waters into one of those overpoweringly lovely Second Life sunsets in search of a shore to wait for us on. I know we will see him again.

[14:19] Chad Sawson: Our next speaker is Ms. Nber Medici, an icon in the SL Sailing community and a great friend of Epi's. Nber the podium is yours.
[14:20] Nber Medici: I'd like to thank Fanci for giving me the opportunity to speak.
[14:20] Nber Medici: MarkTwain White wanted to be here today and cannot.
[14:20] Nber Medici: He asked me to give all of you his deepest regrets, especially Pippa.
[14:20] Nber Medici: I became friends with Epi in November of 2007.
[14:20] Nber Medici: I remember the first time that I had a chance to talk with Epi.
[14:21] Nber Medici: I am a dedicated profile reader ....
[14:21] Nber Medici: and was astonished to find someone who named themselves after an ancient Greek philosopher.....
[14:21] Chad Sawson: :-)
[14:21] Nber Medici: AND to then to find out that they did it because they had read his works and be0lieved in his philosophy.

[14:21] Nber Medici: It quickly became clear to me that there were two attributes of Epi that stood out to me more than anything.

[14:21] Nber Medici: One was his intellect. Epi was a deep thinker. He wasn't just smart, he thought deeply about things.
[14:22] Nber Medici: MANY people are smart. Many of them do not think deeply about things.
[14:22] Nber Medici: The second attribute of Epi that stood out to me was the fact that he was a true gentleman.
[14:22] Nber Medici: He treated people with respect, and he expected to be treated with respect in return.
[14:22] Nber Medici: When I learned that Epi had been diagnosed with cancer, it was as if a ton of bricks had dropped on me.
[14:22] Nber Medici: I remember thinking... why is it the GOOD ones?
[14:23] Nber Medici: I remember when he spoke in the summer of 2010 at the Sail for Life weekend to the gathered crowd at Blake Sea - Haggerty.

[14:23] Nber Medici: He was so positive in his outlook and his love for Pippa was so clear.
[14:23] Nber Medici: Epi, I miss you.
[14:23] Nber Medici: I'm not sure how many of you are aware that Epi was a guest commentator once on Sail On.
[14:23] Nber Medici: It was a Skutsje race on June 1st, 2008 and he not only sailed, but also did color commentary.

[14:26] Jane Fossett: I first met Epi early in 2007; he was having a great time cruising the waters around the old Nantucket sim, but he decided he wanted to try racing.
"Big Boat" racing was just starting up t
[14:26] Jane Fossett: "Big Boat" racing was just starting up then, and Epi jumped in with both feet. He got a Blue Water Schooner, and by April he started his own GMT-friendly weekly race series. A month later he bumped over to Sailors Cove, where he continued Big-Boats, but then quickly expanded his interest into pretty much anything that floats!

[14:27] Jane Fossett: Epi was in the original ACA32 finalist group, and then made a strong showing in the Tako Cup that followed.
[14:27] Jane Fossett: As Nber just mentioned, he then fell in love with Skutsje!!

[14:27] Jane Fossett: In the summer of 2007 he left Sailors Cove and moved back to NYC, but it actually made little difference to him. He loved all the sailing groups, and always worked to build bridges between communities.
[14:28] Jane Fossett: My favorite memory of Epi racing has to be the Mowry Sprints in March 2008; Epi and Fanci teamed up together and won their division with a pretty amazing pyrotechnic display of Tako skills. :-)

[14:28] Jane Fossett: A month later on April 17 2008, Patrick Leavitt named Epi Commodore of the new Fishers Island Yacht Club. As they say, the rest was history. :-)

[14:29] Jane Fossett: Epi was the true embodiment of a great person and wonderful sailor. His thoughts were always for his fellow sailors and community, and he constantly looked for ways to join us all together, with a smile, a wink, and a song.
[14:30] Jane Fossett: I often joked with him... that he was far too nice a person to make a great sailboat racer. :-)

and them getting out on the water as a result.

in the sailing community from time to time, "Where have all the flowers gone?" Well ?
epi is a whole garden thats disappeared now, and thats a space i doubt will be ?
filled easily if at all! As they say we don't often mis something we take for ?
granted until it's gone - and boy do I miss him now.

Ippa, your Eulogy can words to the mystery of love. Thank you for the courage to share that testament of love.
[15:41] Francois Jacques: I first met Epi inlate 2007. He appeared sailing a Tako knock off which he had made. "So what do you do here? And how can I become involved?" he asked.
[15:41] Francois Jacques: His enthusiasm, wit, intelligence, and fun loving was evident from the start. Within a short while Epi agreed to be an RD - he ran races well, and his races were popular.
[15:41] Francois Jacques: NYC had the pleasure of having him live with us for a short while - and the strength of his commitment to the sailing community - and his gifts as an event planner, RD, Boat Maker and fun-loving enthusiast bloomed over the next months. " I am all about fun. Actualy fun is my middle name.!" he said.
[15:42] Francois Jacques: Shortly thereafter, on April 18, 2008, as Jane said, Epi was crowned Commodore of FIYC, "and the rest was history."
[15:42] Francois Jacques: Robert Frost wrote a poem that applies to Epi's untimely death, "Nothing Gold Can Stay."
[15:42] Francois Jacques: It was customary of Epic to talk to me from time to time about the power of multi-club SL Sailing efforts. In this spirit we named our first omni-club center in the Fudo Region after him.
[15:43] Francois Jacques: The "Epi Center" is intended to be a sailing resource center with information about sailing, yacht clubs, and SL sail boats. Epi was a shining exemplar of the fun and smart spirit that is this sailing community. His inspiration lives on in us.

Quickly we became friends with many common interests, and he invited me to the Fishers Island Yacht Club as one of his race directors.
[16:01] Tig Laxness (tig.spijkers): Epi was an exceptional man, with a vision you will not find often in Second Life or Real Life.
[16:02] Tig Laxness (tig.spijkers): Here in second life everything is fictional, virtual, a role play.
[16:02] Tig Laxness (tig.spijkers): Epi was different, Epi made a difference, he was a man that brought order and meaning in this world of chaos.

It is called “Crossing the Bar”.
[16:03] Tig Laxness (tig.spijkers): In the poem “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, he uses the metaphor of a sand bar to describe the barrier between life and death. A sandbar is a ridge of sand built up by currents along a shore. In order to reach the shore, the waves must crash against the sandbar, creating a sound that Tennyson describes as the “moaning of the bar.”
We must cross this treacherous sandbar to reach the safety of the harbor and as in his poem hope to face our pilot.

This year’s event was again held at Fishers Island Yacht Club on Clipper Bay.
I am very pleased to say it was a HUGE success raising a whopping 85,033 L$!!!

Rosie Papp and the Sailor's Cove Ferries

I'm Rosie Papp, and here is a little about me:

I live in Sailor's Cove and I operate the 103rd SL Can SAR or Canadian Search and Rescue Squadron in SecondLife. 103 SL Can SAR is loosely based on the 103 Canadian Search and Rescue Squadron posted in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Though we have no real life affiliation to Can SAR, we do our best to emulate their professional work here in the SecondLife medium.

Several months ago Fanci and Patrick, owners of Sailor's Cove, offered 103 SL Can SAR a chance to operate in the forty-four Sailor's Cove sims as Security. It was, and is still, our great pleasure to serve Sailor’s Cove, its residents and users in this capacity.

Sailor's Cove Ferry:

This led to the other ways I participate in the Sailor’s Cove life, and the introduction of the first Sailor’s Cove Ferry Tour located in Bull Rock Parcel A. I have always loved lighthouses and have found them enchanting. There is just something naturally romantic about the lone light house and its keeper out lighting the coast to save ships from fatal accidents and there is nothing as pretty as a lighthouse framed by a sunset.

Sailor's Cove has several historically accurate lighthouses within its borders that I took the time to research on the internet. I found the history of them so interesting that I felt it would be nice to share it with other residents and visitors to Sailor’s Cove. That’s how the first Ferry Tour boat was created. The second ferry boat came about later on when I rented some boat slips in Bartlett Narrows. I noted that traffic is often centered at the Theater and that few people explore the southern sims. The ferry seemed an interesting way to get people to see what Sailor’s Cove has to offer and to take people to the outdoor dance area below Bartlett Narrows.

The Theme for the Ferry was easy: everyone loved Captain Jack Sparrow. So I created Sailor’s Cove version of the Disney pirate.

Future Projects:

At the moment we are in the set-up and planning stage for a scuba diving sim in Sailor’s Cove. Its location will be announced when we are ready for the first dives.

Sailor’s Cove is my home and one of the most interesting and beautiful places in SecondLife and the little things I do to help make it special are just my way of thanking Sailor’s Cove, its residents and users for letting me be part of it all.

Recently I discovered Juli Gothly's delightful boat shop in Sailor's Cove and, immediately, I wanted to know more about the person behind the shop. So I asked Juli to tell us about herself, her life in Sailor's Cove and her boats. Here is her story............

"I like online games and used to play a lot. But most of the games are the same, you kill monsters and your level goes up and so on. Of course communication with other players is a big part of it, too. One day I had enough of killing monsters, so I started SL - lol.

As I am from Japan (in case you couldn't tell from my accent - lol) I started in a Japanese sim and had a little house and a little shop there. Then I found out about the United Sailing Sims through Taku Raymaker, the owner of Waypoint Yacht Club. For a long time it was my daily thing to sail from WYC to Sailor's Cove (that was before the USS joined to the mainland.)

As you get near to Sailor's Cove, you can see the bay with a shop (very fortunately, it is my shop now), moored boats then more shops along the bay. I just loved the atmosphere. One day Taku told me that there was a shop vacant there so I jumped on it. It was December, 2008. Fanci was kind enough to let me move to the shop at the end of the pier when it became vacant a few months after that.

In regards to boats, I am not a yachts-only lover, I love any water craft. When I knew there were yachts in SL, I went to get one. But it was too difficult to handle so I decided to build one for myself. The first one I built was an America's Cup-class yacht with motor. The sails were there but didn't move. My yachts had the Tako scripts until Mothgirl released the Fizz3. My existing yachts all have the Fizz3 scripts.

As far as the boat design goes, I don't enjoy making replicas or reproductions at all, although some of my boats are based on ones that exist in real life. There are far better people around than I for the reproductions. For example, I buy Trudeau's when I want a classic yacht reproduction. I actually own a few of them. Or Black Spot if I want to have even older ones. And, yes, I do have some of them, too ;)

I have my own method of hull design, curve and balance which may not be perfectly reproduced by the prims but I try anyway. It is about the overall visual balance. The deck may slope down from the bow and it may be counter-balanced by the curve of the cabin top, etc.

I am not a sailor in real life. I am a canoe person (or I used to be anyway) - Surfski and OC1 to be precise. Surfski is the fastest paddling ocean craft used by the lifeguards. OC stands for Outrigger Canoe, 1 is for single.

They are both sit-on-top-type canoes, therefore suitable in places like Hawaii. I actually make OC1, OC2 and OC6 in SL (no one buys them though - lol.) My OC6 is probably one of the most fun boats in SL. It is for six people and everybody can stop paddling individually and the boat speed corresponds to the amount of people paddling as well.

You asked about my shops in other locations. I think I was rushing too much. Of course, when you are selling things, good sales would cheer you up. I tried to expand Juli Designs by having branches and vendors but I am closing them one by one. It didn't suit me. I would like to have my shop only at Sailor's Cove now.

I have my parcel in Fishers Island which I call my workshop. As the name suggests, I have my work space up in the sky although it has a security orb. Nothing is secret about what I make but I wouldn't like to have my thing copy-botted while I am working on it.

I also enjoy doing the garden there very much. I may plant something which is out of season due to my ignorance but I love gardening. I'd love to have a nice garden and lots of animals (static of course - lol) as much as the prim allows. You will see a lot of roses there soon :)"

MBCC Cruisers Party Hearty at Cut Water

RB: How long have you been in SecondLife, Benny?

BB: My original avi, Contra Koba, was created in May of 2007 and Benny was made in October, 2007, specifically to captain my Larinda. The reason for this was so my friend, Runa Mc Millan, and I could explore by sea and not have to worry about auto return and no rez areas, as Benny was always sitting at the helm. We could jump off and back on and leave Benny to “guard” the boat.

RB: When and how did you discover Sailor’s Cove Sims?

BB: That’s a bit of a yarn, so I’ll try to be brief (not). In my first week of SL I came across a Tako vendor somewhere out on the mainland. At that time I was still exploring by walking from place to place, mostly along shorelines. Having no money at the time, I picked up the free version of the Tako. Well, there was the hook – even sailing it in the dreaded SL-generated wind was a hoot for me. After that, I discovered that simulated sailing was available in SL and I began to scour the map for open waters to play in.

I discovered a lot of places, probably long since gone, on the continents. One day, using map search, I found Nantucket sim and, from there, Hollywood and Jacqui’s sims, etc. Also, I discovered there were actually clubs that could be joined, places that you could rent slips, racing – a whole community of sailing enthusiasts that I had no idea would exist here.

From group notices, I learned about the boat show held at Sailor’s Cove and completely fell in love with the look of it. I’d lived in places like that back in the 80’s and decided this was where I’d want to settle as a home base. We rented a slip and an apartment there in November, 2007 and have been Sailor’s Cove residents ever since.

RB: How did you come to be SCS Harbormaster and how long have you had that title?

BB: Well, my friend Runa and I (Contra) used to hang out on our Larinda quite a lot and talk with passers-by. Many people would inquire about renting slips or just generally want to jawbone about sailing in both the virtual and real worlds. So one day I suggested to the estate managers that they really could use a Harbormaster here to help people get set up on renting slips and to keep the harbor clear of prims (like mistakenly rezzed HUDs) or just strange objects in general. I was half-joking at the time, but the very next day they asked me if I’d like to do that.

I (Contra) said “I don’t think I’m the guy for that, but I know someone who is” and I logged in Benny. Benny’s avi is based on someone I knew in RL. He was the owner of a small marina and salvage yard in East Boston - a big, burly guy with an ever-present grin on his face. So I thought “hmm, this would be fun” and I was not mistaken.

RB: What are your duties as SCS Harbormaster?

BB: At first it was more or less a meet-and-greet kind of thing, in the harbor itself, telling people about slip rentals, helping them to contact the right person to set them up, etc. As the estate grew and I was given return objects permissions for Sailor’s Cove-owned land, I started prim hunts. A lot of the space didn’t have auto return set, so all sorts of stuff was left lying about.

I did have fun with it, though. I didn’t fly from sim to sim; I used my little Downeaster to cruise around. Sometimes, I’d sail and sometimes I’d SCUBA (yes, Benny has SCUBA and it’s quite a sight.) I still do that from time to time, with the help of some very nice residents as well. We try to keep the waters free from flotsam and ghost ships as best we can.

As auto return has now been set on most of the estate land, it’s a bit easier to maintain and not as time consuming these days. I still try to get out there a few times a week to dislodge and return lost boats or send a friendly IM to the owners to come retrieve them. Slip rentals are still my main function on the estate. Also, I check that the sims are operating correctly and keep a wary eye on the horizon for the rare griefer.

RB: Do you have any most or least favorite parts of your job?

BB: Well, firstly, I would never call it a “job”. It’s something I enjoy doing because I do like to be helpful when and where I can, naturally. So there are no least favorite parts. What I like best is being directly helpful to another person. This takes many forms but I’d have to say what makes Benny smile the most is helping the new player that’s just discovered sailing to get their first boat.

With all the great free boats available now, it’s easy to get even the newest of the new onto the water and hopefully hooked like the rest of us. I’ll never forget that I was once a newbie with no money walking on a deserted sim when I discovered sailing in SL and it’s brought me a lot of great online experiences and friends. I like passing that on.

RB: Do you have a favorite story or incident to tell?

There have been quite a lot over the years of doing this, but I’d think the day I discovered the undersea love nest has to be one of my favorites. There is a depression in the terraforming on one of our sims. It’s a hole about 5 meters deep and almost perfectly square and flat at the bottom. While I was on prim patrol, I found someone had rezzed their sexbed down there – possibly SCUBA enthusiasts or Merfolk. I thought that was clever, but I do have an evil mind sometimes.

RB: Benny, in what other ways are you involved in the Sailor’s Cove community?

BB: Aside from being chief cook and bottle washer, I have been involved in the Theater for some time as security and recently I’ve been helping out with hosting there a few times a week. I also DJ but that’s not limited to Sailor’s Cove. I’m hoping to do more impromptu parties at Cutwater – after all everyone likes a party.

RB: Where do you like to sail in SL and what is your favorite (type of) boat?

BB: I sail quite a bit in SL, most every day, really. I’m a cruiser, though, not much for racing. I have tried some racing and have a lot of respect for the people that can do it well. It’s just not my cup of tea.

For me, putting on some nice music and cruising around the USS and beyond is what I like. I sail without HUDs and in mouselook to try to get the best virtual experience I can from the simulation. It can be quite Zen-like, a great relaxer after a hard day of playing real life.

My favorite boats are Trudeau’s, without a doubt. The newest ones are very close to the real world experiences I’ve had sailing. And besides being very functional with well thought out features, they are great eye candy. Lately, I sail the Tahiti 2, Leetle Cat (a boat I owned in RL, actually) and the Twenty. I still love my Larinda and take her out now and then, as well.

There are so many great boat makers out there now and a lot that I haven’t tried. But I’m not one to go out and buy the latest thing. I tend to stick with what I know and JT boats suit my style, I guess.

RB: Do you have other hobbies or pastimes in SL?

BB: I’ve done a bit of modifying my boats, along with help from Runa. She’s quite good with making the textures and animations I need for my little projects. A couple of examples of this can be seen on Bartlett Narrows docks.

We try to get out often as well to see live music acts that we like and to explore new places around the grid. But sometimes we’re just as happy to stay at home on Race Rock and dance or fish. I see SL as a relaxing element in my life and have no desire to make it more intense than it needs to be. I just don’t have those ambitions and my real world is mentally taxing enough. SL is me time…he he.

RB: Your profile says “son of a son of a sailor." Would you tell us a bit about this part of your RL?

BB: That’s from the Jimmy Buffet song, of course, and this is a yarn, so here we go…..My earliest memories of boats are from going to visit my grandparent’s house. PopPop, as we called him, had a wooden sailboat on a cradle in his backyard that may have been there from the early 50’s as far as I knew. He’d worked on it for years, on and off. In his den he had a lot of books on seamanship, sailing, boatbuilding and lots and lots of scale models of sailing ships he’d built. There were all kinds of cool stuff, but the boat itself is what I remember best.

Now, this boat may have been no more than 20 feet, if that, but when you’re six years old and playing on it with your brothers and cousins, it’s a world cruiser, eh? We’d hang out for hours, talking about the places we’d sail to, far off in the tropics. My uncles would tell stories about pirates and south sea islands. You get the picture.

I think I was nine when I sailed for the first time. My Granddad bought a Sunfish for my uncles to sail. We sailed at the Cooper River Yacht Club here in South Jersey almost every weekend. As we got to know other folks there, we’d get to sail with them on larger dinghies and I learned the principles of sailing and found more and more literature about sailing. By the time I was 15, my father had bought a Hobie 16 that we sailed around the bays and estuaries at the Jersey shore. We also took it out off the beaches of Strathmere where we rented a summer house every June.

Sadly, my Grandpop's project boat never saw the water as he passed away before it was finished and it was hauled off or sold. I honestly can’t say if he was ever a real sailor or just a man with a dream about it. But I know for a fact, he was a sailor in his heart. Out of his passion for sailboats was grown mine….and so I am a son of a son of a sailor.

RB: Benny, is there anything else you’d like to add or have your Sailor’s Cove neighbors know about you?

BB: Well, really I’d like to say to the extended family that is all the great people that make up the USS and sailing community in SecondLife, that if you see me out cruising be sure to shout me “Ahoy” and realize that if I don’t answer I’ve probably got my head in the fridge getting a cold one – so gimme a wide berth! Resting on a granite base in the center of Gloucester's long, narrow Stacy Esplanade is the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial. It is an eight-foot tall, bronze statue of a fisherman dressed in oilskins standing braced at the wheel on the sloping deck of his ship. It is positioned so that the fisherman is looking out over Gloucester Harbor. To permanently memorialize the thousands of fishermen lost at sea in the first three centuries of Gloucester's history. In 1879 alone, 249 fishermen and 29 vessels were lost during a terrible storm.

New to Sailors Cove is a statue of this memorial. It is centered in the entry to the Sailors Cove Marina. Built by Ub Yifu, and commissioned by Drwyndwn Tyne as a gift to the sailors of SL and Sailors Cove. This replica of the real life statue stands in our Marina looking outward. It is a fitting place for such a fine statue and build. Thank You Drw!

We Don't Mean to Frighten You...err...Yes We Do!

BeeJee Bouchere's "pumkin djoezz theatre" at Schooner Run in Sailor's Cove Estates. You will LOVE watching some really bad horror movies. hehehe In fact, I was begged to please skip that sim during restarts because one guest was having so much fun and was glued to his seat!

Seriously have you seen the seats? *wicked grin*

Unfortunately there are only two days left to catch a show. Each day a different movie is played. Today's is "The Sadist" and tomorrow's is "Dead People".

The Sadist (1963). This is believed to be the first feature film based on real life serial killers Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate. Mainstream Hollywood would not produce films inspired by the pair until a decade after this one. A number of films were inspired by the duo (some very loosely) and included such major examples as Terrence Malick's Badlands (1973) and Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers (1994).

I'd give you a blurb on "Dead People" if I had the info. LOL You'll just have to ask BeeJee or fly your brooms on over to see for yourself! *muwhahahaha*

A true classic! The human mind is a wonderful thing. Imagine the only means of warning of imminent attack by an unknown force *OUT THERE* back in 1938 was radio. NO visuals, only words. Words seeping into your mind and conjuring up all manner of pictures, and with it, unspeakable fears.

Come huddle with us around the Clubhouse radio and get ready for a real treat!

When this originally aired, it caused a public panic that was so real, listeners actually ran from their homes for safety, and law was changed regarding radio plays.

(I better get a nap in so I can attend bright eyed and bushy tailed!! haha)

Heath Elvehjem (AKA Heath Vercher IRL) is a natural choice whose musical home has been Sailor's Cove Theater for three years. His music mixes acoustic piano with electronic orchestra for a scentillating vibe that is inspiring and invigorating.

Sailor's Cove Theater and Park has managed to lure the highly sought-after singing sensation Satin Galli to perform a one hour concert for us!

Satin's concert will be at a special time for SC Theather-- 11AM SLT, so more residents across the world can enjoy a bit of ♫ music by the sea ♫ before the Fishers Island Yacht Club events get under way.

Satin Galli is no stranger to live music either in real life or SL. He has sung most of his life, and grew up in a very musical family. "Everything involved music growing up." For many years, he played drums and sang lead vocals in various bands in New York.

Winner of the LEMA Awards 2009 for Best Male Vocalist in SL and the AMA Awards 2009 for Best Duo with Erin68 Frog. Satin Galli has made a name for himself in Second Life as a top vocalist.

From oldies, country, pop, classic, to new rock, you'll hear some of it all listening to Satin; including covering artists like: Bread, Clapton, Rogers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cold Play, and 3 Doors Down.

He played for the Sail for Life party this past weekend, and we just couldn't get enough of his velvety and powerful voice!

Once again, Sailor's Cove Theater is proud to be involved in the annual Jamm for Genes charity fundraiser, supporting the Children's Medical Research Institute.

"Jamm for Genes" is part of the annual "Jeans for Genes" fundraiser for the Childrens Medical Research Institute, an Australian charity with global benefits. "Jamm for Genes" is all about live music raising money, for research into cell biology that helps with both prevention and cure of childhood, congenital and genetic diseases.

From 12-3PM SLT, August 8th, musical artists will be performing at the theater at Fisher's Island. Donation kiosks are set up on either side of the stage. This year's goal is 1 million L's. Woot!

The acts are:
12PM- Pmann Sands
1PM- Jonas Lunasea
2PM- This Device

A nice mix of musical genres are represented for your listening and dancing pleasure. Pmann Sands sounds include rock, acoustic, and electro-acoustic. Jonas Lunasea specializes in cabaret, jazz, blues, and swing. This Device describes their sound as ElectroPunkDustrial. The group members include Damaris Whitfield, who plays guitar, bass, keys and lead vocals; and Snare Whitfield who plays drums, keys and vocals.

On 31st of May, Pippa and I held our partnering celebration in the gardens of the Fisher Island Yacht Club in Clipper Bay. It was a wonderful day and for us a very important event. I think there is no doubt we viewed this with the same importance as any real life event we could have shared together with friends. We had the usual elaborate preparations with clothing and arranging the party, and when we arrived we were very excited and a little nervous.

We wanted very much to capture the moment when I proposed to Pippa, which was during a performance by Joaquin Gustav, the well known latin guitarist. Luckily for us he was available for our party and being able to celebrate and dance to his music was very special to us. We also had a gift from DJ Q of 1 ½ hours of his show so we are very grateful to him for that.

Before we started the party I felt I wanted to say something and so I had a very short speech, as follows:

Dear friends, I would like to welcome you all to our partnership celebration party. This is a very special moment for Pippa and me, and we would like to share that with our dearest friends.

When Pippa strolled into our world here at Sailors Cove, we were all thrilled. She is an amazing person with lots of creativity and ideas. Just have a look later at the Garden across the club and see what Drew and Pippa are building for the community.

To make the story short, I thought I was going to be a confirmed bachelor in SL, but Pippa has changed all of that with her sweetness and lovely charm.

We were at a performance of Joaquin Gustav's when I proposed to Pippa. I was thrilled that she accepted. After that Pippa and me exchanged rings to show the world our love for each other.

For the party today we have organised three hours of entertainment starting with Joaquin to remind us of our special evening, and who also happens to be the top latin performer here on SL. After Joaquin we are pleased to have Seba Sideways who also featured on our special evening and who plays fantatic saxophone music. Finallly we have DJ Q and he takes requests so feel free to ask for your favourite music. We hope you will stay with us throughout and enjoy the party with us.

We would like to thank Fanci and Patrick for allowing us to have our party at the clubhouse here in the SIMS of Sailor Cove. Fanci and Patrick mean a lot to Pippa and me and we are very pleased to have taken up residence together in our beautiful house in Anchor Cove.

We also want to thank our good friend Kath for the wonderfull invitation cards she made for us. Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has been so gracious and kind to us in giving us their best wishes for our future together.

Now I will ask my lovely Pippa to have the first dance with me. Pippa darling please follow me to the dance floor. We hope that all of you will join with us after the first dance.

Pippa and I danced the first dance to the lovely music of ‘Moondance’ which we adore and seems to be our tune now. Then we were joined by our guests. The party lasted for over 3 hours and often you see people leave once the party develops but this time more and more arrived during the evening. It was heart-warming to observe how many of our friends were there. In addition, many friends who could not make it send us there congratulations and warm words. I would like to thank everybody for the lovely gifts the gave us. Juli Gothly’s wonderful custom Elise comes to mind among many others.

We would like to take the opportunity for thanking all of our friends for the wonderful support they showed. When I escorted Pippa home after the party she whispered in my ear; ‘everybody should experience this love’. That is what we wish all of our friends.

Sunday's program will begin at 1pm SLT. This 24 year old Mathematics student hails from a small town near Munich, Germany and has been playing classical piano for 15 years. He has performed in competitions across Germany.

We'll its been a few weeks now since we joined Nautilus. So far, so good. We have not been hit with a rash of griefer attacks or huge mega yachts invading the serenity of our home. What Fanci and I have noticed is an increase in cruisers exploring our area.

The one thing that seems to hit me whenever I explore the Nautilus area is how lucky we are. Sailors Cove is truly the best kept secret in SL. We have a great community of owners, merchants, renters and users that frequent our waters and air space. Lately, even underwater adventurers seem to come and enjoy. There truly is much to do in SC and abroad now.

We have much in the works now and the future looks bright and fun.

Another Beautiful Sunset In Sailors Cove.

It sure is a pleasurable thing to be cruising around the waters of Sailors Cove and every once and a while a beautiful moment like this takes place. The beauty of the area is sure evident when a nice sunset shows up behind our own Race Rock lighthouse.
The sailing is pleasurable but this time Fanci and I were enjoying a nice cruise in one of Juli Gothly's pleasure crafts (Elise Speed Eight). It is a pleasure to cruise and is a great build.

IMPORTANT USS ANNOUNCEMENT

To all friends of Sailors Cove,

All of the owners of the USS are making an announcement that is unprecedented. We have been discussing a project that Jack Linden and Linden Labs has been thinking about for a while now. That being, setting up a joint large area of open water, a virtual Ocean, off of their new Nautilus Sims. They have made the offer to us to move and reconfigure the entire USS to fit into the area around there. We would in essence be connected to Mainland by water but all of the different Estates will retain their independent status. So we get the cake and eat it too:).

The detail is simply that LL will set up a 6x6 grid of water plus a finger of water to the East side of the ocean grid. This body of water will be Governor Linden water and will connect to the mainland. We have all been hashing over different possibilities of how to make this work for our different estates. We will try to get a map out to you so that you can see the configuration since describing it here is very daunting

We have been very vocal on all of our concerns in this endeavor and raised a lot of questions in light of all that has happened recently. All of the owners, met with Jack Linden to discuss this project in voice. In short, that meeting put to rest a lot of fear and concern about it. He is genuinely excited about it and the possibilities it brings to both parties. It also brings to the mix some stability for the USS as well. The land prices for mainland have remained stable through all of this Open Space fiasco. That stability will help Sailors Cove remain independent and get land values back on a positive growth. Plus, the sailing and flying possibilities are endless now. There is also a simple fact that Mainland supports the majority of the users in SL. This means more opportunity for growth of sailing.

USS Announcement of Great Import
December 19th, 2008

The United Sailing Sims announces a joint community project with Linden Lab to enhance the sailing experience throughout Second Life. Once the move of the 130 plus sim complex takes place to an area east of Nautilus City, the USS will be well positioned to expand their current activities into the 40 plus sims of the about to be formed Blake Sea(named for Sir Peter Blake, the legendary racer and marine environmentalist).

From sailboat racing, to scuba diving, to surfing, to long range cruising, the areas around Nautilus, Blake Sea, and the United Sailing Sims will provide Second Life Residents with unparalleled recreational possibilities. In addition the USS leadership will work with Linden Lab to enhance water based activities across the entire Grid.

Linden Lab states in their formal announcement that “this is the first time that we’ve allowed estates to connect to the Mainland in this way, and it is testimony to both the great community the USS has built up, and our desire to work with resident groups to improve the Mainland experience.”

The actual move will take place in the weeks ahead.

Congratulations to Skipper Nikolaidis who after taking home medals in all previous five cups has finally won himself the Big Cat Cup. he has been without a doubt the most committed cat skipper. He has taken part in virtually every race there has ever been 159 total. Its a pleasure to announce that Skipper was the winner of this years race.

What a great time it is watching the Racing in Sailors Cove. Recently, on day 6 of the Big Cat Cup I managed to take a few shots. This one is Skipper cruising North on the return to Zinnemann Island after the Southern most turn on the Z2 coarse.
The Big Cats can move so fast with an experienced skipper at the helm its hard to get into position for a photo when they shoot on by. This one is Skipper and Kei flying by in Cut Water Marina. The current top three racers are all so close together that the the winner is to close to call. Come check it out at Noon on Zinnemann island.

The sailor with the least total points wins the cup at the end of the series.

NEW THEME AND SEAPLANE BASE

In order to keep up with the growing interest in Seaplanes we have added two more sims to the Estate. Bull Rock and Grand Manan Island. GMI is the beginning of the new North Woods/Newfoundland theme. This new area is still very similar to New England but will be a harsher environment. More rugged on the water line and yet more lush and more trees in the interior. It is also colder so the season changes should hit there first as it works its way down.

Located on GMI is a Seaplane base called Aurora Base. There are docks here that are wider for the planes as well as some cottages for rent. Plus, a hanger and Terminal as the centerpiece of the island. The Terminal will have a viewing / control tower and should have a great view.

In Bull Rock we have added a new feature for those who like live aboards. We have mooring buoys available and several of them are parceled as well.

As we expand the new theme into more residential, we have added that in the this North Woods/Newfoundland theme seaplanes and helicopters will be allowed on residential land. There are some size restraints of the aircraft and of coarse the usual keeping the passages clear for sailing.

Sailors Cove is still a sailing first community and have not changed from our commitment to that. This new theme helps to address the fact that many landowners desire to have a plane left out. The current two themes do not permit that.

Sailors Cove is on the move again and the future looks exciting.

Wilkommen!! to the German Ship Rats!

Our dear friend and long time resident Jeremia Spotter has purchased the lovely tropical island of Tiga as a home position for the German SL Sailing community called the Schiffsratten.

The Ships Rats have been involved in sailing in the Sailors Cove/USS Sims and Jeremia tells us that "during the last weeks and month more and more of us found their 'home waters' here on the USS-sims and feel as a part of them. A lot of us have fun to take part on regatta's on plum gut or manning, or sailing the zinnemann ladder."

Theater is Ready for Reopening!

Hello from Sesi Ackland! As Jojamela mentioned in the previous post I have recently taken over the theater at Sailors Cove. I've been involved in Second Life music from every angle as the rl and sl wife of SL musician, Winston Ackland. I am the manager of Winston and Linus Radford in Second Life and have helped organize and plan several large charity events, weekend long music festivals and other events in SL. Stepping up as venue manager was a natural progression and I couldn't imagine a better stage to manage then Sailors Cove.

Sailors Cove has always been a very well known and respected stage within Second Life's music community and when Jojamela's plans to find a new manager became public, I immediately volunteered. The idea of Sailors stage suffering and/or eventually disappearing like so many wonderful stages do in SL was a sad one. I am honored to step up and take over, my goal is to do everything I can to maintain Sailor Cove's position as one of the finest stages in SL.

I look forward to returning the venue into a busy place and I am well under way, our first show is Monday August 11th, 12pm slt. Very little will change at Sailors Cove, there simply is no need. A few of the regular musicians will return but of course there will be new faces and talent as well. I suspect that within a few weeks, the stage will be alive and kicking.

This fall I am planning a few bigger events, including Art in Park, a fall festival with two of the most talented and popular artists in Second Life and of course, live music.

I'm very pleased to announce that Sesi Ackland has agreed to assume the role of Sailors Cove Theater Manager. Many of you know that I've had some RL issues that have prevented me from being inworld much these days, especially the month of July where I took a holiday.

RL continues to interfere in my SL endeavors and Sesi has volunteered to step up to the podium and take over management. Sesi will be the contact person for scheduling musicians and events at the Theater property.

The theater is changing to a tips only venue, so your continued wonderful support of Live Music in SL is very much appreciated. Be sure and check the calendar for upcoming shows and come enjoy the best live music that SL has to offer.

Jamm for Genes at SC theater was a great success

Jamm for Genes went off as planned on Friday Aug 1 with few changes in the lineup of live artists for the 24 hours as planned and ended up stretching to 26 hours in total with a grand total amount of $612,482Lindens raised. Jamm for Genes SL 2008 is now officially over however if you would like to donate to Jamm for Genes which is still going on in the real world as of this posting you can go to the Jeans for Genes website

Patrick Leavitt (Leavitt), Izabella Bentham (Bentham), and Tasha Kostolany (Kostolany) are pleased to announce that they have amicably settled all matters and disputes concerning the Second Life regions known as and making up Sailor’s Cove. Leavitt, Bentham, and Kostolany each regret the recent discord between them, the public displays that transpired, and the effect this may have caused to the residents of Sailor’s Cove.

Bentham and Kostolany have spent thousands of hours over the past year and half to make Sailor’s Cove the best sailing region in Second Life. In recognition of their hard work, Leavitt has compensated Bentham and Kostolany for their contributions to Sailor’s Cove, and Bentham and Kostolany have decided to pursue other opportunities within Second Life. Effective immediately, Bentham and Kostolany are no longer associated with Sailor’s Cove Management, and Leavitt wishes them well in their future endeavors.

SC to Join With USS

It's finally here.... Sailors Cove Sims is pleased to announce that an agreement has been made with the owners of the United Sailing Sims to attach and become the largest group of sims dedicated to the sailing community.

The connection will be made just to the east of Bulia as soon as LL decides to drop it.

In addition, the entire complex will be moved to another space on the map, allowing further expansion of the entire complex.

Celebrations are being planned, including a meeting of all yacht clubs. See this announcement on the USS website for further details.

Skutsjesilen hits Sailors Cove Sims

At the moment a lot of SC residents and top sailors are getting hooked up by a new sailing boat the Green Turtle Tjalk or Skutsje. The racing in this boat, that started under FIYC flag, is rapidly becoming a racing class of its own.

The Skutsje is a traditional sailing barge form the Netherlands, with twin leeboards rather than a fixed keel or centerboard. Outside of the Netherlands, you'll often hear these boats referred to simply as a "Dutch Barge" This type of craft has a long racing history in the Netherlands that continues to the present day with the annual Skutsjesilen regatta held in Friesland.

Every friday 11.30 am slt there is a skutsjesilen race from the Plum Gut start line using the FY05 course. There you can witness the sailing of Delinda Dyrssen, BeeJee Boucher, ahjep Kattun, Epicurus Emmons among others. Delinda was recently awarded the title of Queen of Skutsje for winning the first two races.

Sunday Many 18th 10 am slt a new exciting development took place. Skutsjesilen racing was live broadcasted on Sail On TV. We used the Balboa course, starting at the Hollywood start line in the USS. Twelve Skutsje sailors showed up, and our own SC resident ahjep Kattun won the racing. You can watch the show here: http://slcn.tv/sailon

Miss Fizz 2008

Sailors Cove Theater and the Fishers Island Yacht Club is pleased to present the first annual Miss Fizz beauty pageant at 2pm SLT at the Theater. We have some lovely contestants and great judges. The stage is set and we hope everyone can join us for what we hope will be a lot of fun.

At 7pm SLT the Fishers Island Yacht Club will be hosting the Miss Fizz formal dance at the clubhouse on Anchor Cove. This will be a formal affair with DJ Midnight Capalini providing us some lovely romantic tunes to dance the night away.

FIYC phenix arrises

Fishers Island Yacht Club has literally risen from its ashes. After a clubhouse half destroyed, two Race Directors leaving there post, and a skeptical sailing community, things looked very gloomy indeed.

But so often under hardship, the best in people and human relations tend to surface. Somehow a miracle took place. We rebuild the clubhouse to the level of a SL monument, redesigned sailing-courses, communicated with the sailing community, appointed officers, made FIYC club cloth, re-established winners row, appointed volunteers to the post of Race Direct

or and established a nice spread of sailing events over the week. We are doing races and many events in the Fizz-cup and of course we still sponsor the Big Cat Cup.

And when i see how much work everybody puts into this to make it happen and in what good spirit we work together as a team

or more like a family, it makes me proud and emotional. Its just unbelievable! A community has been liberated and is now on

it road to glory, just wait, you haven't seen anything yet!

Important update from the SL Blog site regarding updates to the servers affecting water voids (openspace regions) hopefully this will fix some major issues with sailing lately:

After a few unsuccessful attempts to deploy server version 1.21, we’ve decided to split this into two separate deploys. First, we will deploy a patched version of Server version 1.20. This will include security and performance fixes, including the much-desired reduction memory usage by the physics engine in openspace regions. The plan for this deploy is:

Thursday 04/17, starting very soon : deploy the 1.20 patches to about 100 regions. Assuming all is well, deploy the 1.20 patches to about 1500 regions.
Friday morning 04/18, 5-9AM: deploy 1.20 patches to half of Second Life
Saturday morning 04/18, 5-9AM: deploy 1.20 patches to the rest of Second Life

Patrick Leavitt to meet with FIYC Members

Patrick Leavitt is the owner of the Sailor’s Cove/ Lawson Landing Estate; he is also Commodore of the new Fisher’s Island Yacht Club (FIYC) in Anchor Cove .

Since some sailors may wish to speak directly with Patrick, he is planning to be at FIYC today, Thursday April 17, at 1:00p.m. SLT. Patrick will talk about his vision for the new yacht club and Sailor’s Cove Estate, and he will address any questions or concerns that sailors wish to discuss.

Fanci and I were out cruising around and found this strange object on Sailors cove right behind the park. Come to find out it's a performance test put out by LL to check sim performance.

Last night during Patrick LaSalle's concert Sailors Cove went down for a long time. Patrick Leavitt called LL and they said that the server was having hard disk problems. I guess they set this out to monitor. This is what the profile of the object owner said:

This account is used by Linden Lab to perform timing and reliability tests on the main grid for various actions such as teleporting and wearing attachments. It is an automated system that will not respond to chat or IM. Statistics collected are used to monitor and improve system performance.

It's kinda cool when you think about it... nice to know that sim performance is being monitored by the LL gods :)

New Club House

What a celebration. The new Fishers Island Clubhouse grand opening party last night was a wonderful success. We packed the sim with residents and guests and the compliments flew. Drwydyn Tyne had created the most realistic and beautiful home for the new Fishers Island Yacht Club. As a special treat Heath Elvehjem performed a few tunes for us on his piano, Patrick Leavitt toasted Drw and the community and officially opened the building to the public.

The building has many built in features. There is a handbook listing the features, how to use them and credits in the entrance foyer. It is in the magazine rack just to the right as you enter the doorway. Be sure to pick one up when you visit.

For the past few weeks construction on the FIYC clubhouse has been in progress. Few people have received sneak peeks at it and late late last night it was placed on the ground at it's new location on Anchor Cove (right across from the old clubhouse)

Built and furnished by Drwwyndn Tyne, it is a delight to the eyes, realistic to the extreme and has some fantastic features that are sure to please.

Havok4 raising havok with sailing

Races are being canceled all over the place because of a serious bug that has come to be due to the Havok4 server upgrades. The sailing community is asking that everyone vote for this JIRA issue to have Linden Labs fix it as soon as possible. To vote you only need to login to the JIRA website using your SL name and password.

You can also read more about he issue that is causing boats to come to a dead stop on the SLSF Forum.

This is an urgent issue and we're asking that everyone vote to get this fixed as soon as possible.

I am in the process of adding new content to the blog that I hope you find useful and informative. This blog is very new and will evolve over time for sure. We will be adding links to residents and merchants blogs and websites, listings of land for sale, a link to display race winners and plenty more. If you want us to link to you please do let me know.

On the sidebar you will now see a link to our new Flickr photo stream which you can also access here. When you see the photographs all in one place it is a reminder of how incredibly wonderful it is to live and play in the Sailors Cove Sims. So please join the open access group on Flickr and upload pictures of your home, your friends, your boat or whatever you like! Please do keep it pg though. ;)

The Sailors Cove Sims community is so big and there is so much going on all the time it is hard to keep up, no? I know i feel that way. We have added a calendar to the right that will help you know what is coming up so check back often. If you have an event you would like to include on the calendar please let me know and we will do our best to inform the community via this blog.

If anyone is interested in adding to the Sailors Cove Sims blog please let me know. We could definitely use some volunteers. If you have never blogged before but are interested in learning how this may be the perfect low stress way to explore the wonderful world of blogging. Theater Back open for business

After a week off, and still under construction, the Sailors Cove Theater opened back up for three hours of Live Music concerts. The evening started off at 7pm with the musical comedian Vaughan Michalak, followed by Truelie Telling at 8pm and Wendy Curtiss with Lonnie Rockett at 9pm. It was really great to see so many of our Sailors Cove residents there and i hope everyone had a good time.

in the part of the world where i live it is spring. the snowdrops are poking out from under the mulch and the sun finally feels warm.

spring is the season of rebirth and the members of the sailors cove sims are in the process of rebuilding and strengthening our community. the future looks bright as we come together and build new friendships.

Jojamela has asked me to be the administrator for this new Sailors Cove Sims blog and I am pleased to take on the task. However, I want this to be the community's blog. We will have events and community news posted here for sure. What do you want to see in the blog? Do you have a blog or webpage you would like us to link to here?
